NAB 2018

As always, NAB kicked of for the colorist community with the 6th NAB Colorist Mixer, sponsored by CSI. Over 300 colorists and friends attended for a great evening of chat, food, drink, and of course the treasure trove of sponsor giveaways. This year’s venue was Virgil’s Real Barbecue on the strip, which featured an outside balcony that was perfect for networking and a quiet chat. The beer flowed and the food was sumptuous. Inside the party roared, interrupted only by the most amazing raffle ever – including 2 reference grading monitors, control panels, an NVidia Quadro P6000 and countless other awesome software and hardware prizes.

On the show floor, the theme was very much HDR and even higher resolutions. Our sponsors all had great stories to tell. Blackmagic Design announced an impressive new pocket camera, but for colorists the Resolve 15 updates were impressive. Fusion is now on the resolve timeline with its own page and there are many time savers including fewer clicks, shared nodes, and a LUT browser.

Dolby presented the complete Dolby Vision workflow every hour, with a special guest presentation by Kevin Shaw, CSI at the end of each day and an invitation to colorists to catch up on the booth during the last hour of the show. There were many HDR displays to see, but FSI had not one but two show stoppers. The 65” XM65OU HDR reference display is the biggest and the least-expensive true HDR reference display available and won the NewBay Best of Show Award. Plus the XM310k wowed us with its brilliance, which at 2,000 nits (and maybe more) was the brightest production HDR reference monitor at NAB.

Academy ACES team seemed to be everywhere and it's nice to see that many of the ideas CSI talked about at IBC are actively being worked on.

Also mobile at NAB was Mike Woodworth of Divergent, demonstrating even more great tools in ScopeBox (see the discount offer above). The Film Convert team continue to release new profiles but rumor is there will be important announcements later in the year. And for SAM this was their first show under new owners, industry veteran Grass Valley. CSI is grateful to all our sponsors for financial support and great advice.

Skin Tone Thesis

The Visual Appearance of Skin in Motion Pictures, by Marina Starke, is a thoroughly researched paper with input from many CSI members and other well-known colorists and cinematographers that explores issues that affect all genres in all parts of the world. People are usually the central point of every scene in motion pictures. As we are constantly surrounded by people, we are extremely familiar with skin tones and very sensitive to even the slightest inconsistencies. Read more at  http://www.finalcolor.com/skin/.

CSI Forums

CSI aims to present a unified voice from the colorist community to our fellow professionals and to achieve that we need the privacy of the CSI Forum to discuss matters among ourselves.

The CSI Forum is open to Full, Alliance, Associate, and Corporate members. Check it out now, or if you are not already a member, join us.

If you have something to share, or something you are looking for use the forums or send a request to admin@coloristsociety.com

CSI Members please note that our web pages are very image related. To be considered as a featured colorist you need to add a profile image of yourself or a poster of your work. If you have credits with the CSI suffix, posters or high resolution stills of your work, please forward them to admin@coloristsociety.com for inclusion in a newsletter or on the website.

As always, we appreciate our sponsors (and hope to add more to the list).
