All of us at CSI wish
you a very happy New Year, and are hoping for great things in 2018. Certainly,
it promises to be a big year for CSI. Work on our own Colorist Awards is well
under way, and we expect to announce several working committees soon. If you

Colorist Awards Outline
by Dale Grahn, CSI Fellow
Last month, Dale discussed
why awards for colorists have been long debated yet not realized. In this
second part, he outlines the
basic categories, rules, conditions, and expectations for receiving an award. Read Colorist Awards Part 2 at https://coloristsociety.com/csi-blog/5664634.
These will be discussed privately in the CSI forum, then
finalized and refined by the Awards
Committee before being
officially adopted. Membership involvement and opinions are very important and
welcomed, so please take the time
to visit the forum (https://coloristsociety.com/CSI_forum/5664932), even if it
is to say “yes, I agree."
Role of the Colorist
We are pleased to share
the definition of a colorist, as agreed in the private CSI forums. We suggest
that other organizations use this rather than the many inaccurate and sometimes
inappropriate descriptions that are floating around.
Our definition includes
all the possible functions owned by the colorist, though not all colorists will
have all the skills and many colorists will have other skills that are not
specific to the job.
Ultraviolet 18-3838 is Pantone's color of the year. Interesting that they should give it the name of a
color beyond the human visual system, perhaps that is a nod to BT 2020, which
is, of course, still tantalizingly beyond the range of any of our display systems.
The exact color is RGB values 95, 75, 139 and the html hex code is 5F4B8B. You can find out more, along with some color harmonies at https://www.pantone.com/color-of-the-year-2018-tools-for-designers.
Podcast Year in Review
In this episode of the
Colorist Podcast, Josh looks back at 2017. So much has happened this past year
in the world of the colorist.
Blackmagic unveiled two new affordable panels, as
well as releasing Resolve 14. Filmlight continues to innovate, and shipped
version 5 of Baselight. UHD and HDR are gaining wide adoption, with new content
being available every day.
There is a new forum
discussion on Contracts for Freelance Colorists. Contracts do not need to be
written by lawyers, or even signed paper documents. However, understanding the
basic requirements and getting something in writing can save disputes and
discussions later.
CSI aims to present a unified voice from
the colorist community to our fellow professionals and to achieve that we need
the privacy of the CSI Forum to discuss matters among ourselves.
If you have something to share, or
something you are looking for use the forums or send a request to admin@coloristsociety.com.

resolution stills of your work, please forward them to admin@coloristsociety.com for
inclusion in a newsletter or on the website.
As always, we appreciate our sponsors (and hope to add more to the list).
