Academy Invites 2018

Our CONGRATULATIONS to two of our members who have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Walter Volpatto, CSI and Sheri Eisenberg, CSI have been honored with the prestigious invitation in the Members at Large branch. The Academy does have separate branches for Cinematography, Editing, Sound and Visual Effects but it has been hard for colorists to get recognized. Walter and Sheri are not the first colorists to be invited but hopefully they will be part of a trend to recognize Color as its own branch sometime in the future.

Colorist Mixer IBC 2018

IBC 2018 is just a few weeks away now and the highlight of the show will of course be the Colorist Mixer on Saturday 15the September, from 7pm.  At the same Adam and Siam restaurant as last year. As well as being the place to meet fellow CSI members and colorists from all over the world, there is an incredibly good chance of winning some very special prizes -  such as the gorgeous DM240 reference monitor and case from FSI. We are a sponsor of the Mixer and will be bringing some of the new CSI branded merchandise to give away. Find Kevin Shaw and identify yourself as a CSI full member to get a free shirt of your choice.
Remember the Mixer is strictly limited to 200 tickets, but they are on sale now at https://ibcmixer2018.eventbrite.com.

Working for Equality

CSI strongly supports any action to improve diversity and equality, so we are especially pleased to share this report from Ola Bäccman, CSI who has been proactive in improving gender equality. As well as his commendable incentive program, his clear charts show how deep the problem really is. Read more here. For a list of female colorists, including some CSI members, look here.

Getting Credit

Isaac Molina of Oxido, Mexico City is justifiably proud of his recent credits for The House of Flowers, which is the first Dolby Vision HDR series for Netflix in Latin America. The House of Flowers was directed by Manolo Caro with cinematography by Pedro Gomez Millan and shot with a Sony F55.

Sponsor News

Academy ACES: A year ago at IBC 2017, CSI members met with ACES leaders to discuss colorist proposals to make ACES easier and better to use. The Academy team have been busy asking other users around the world for their thoughts and some improvements have already been released. A comprehensive list of the feedback has now been released on Aces Central, view by clicking here.

BMD: The big news at BMD is the release version of Resolve 15, which includes Fusion integrated on the timeline and over 500 new features. Resolve 15 was awarded the prestigious 2018 Engineering Excellence Award by the Hollywood Professional Association (HPA).  The official step by step training handbook, The Definitive Guide to DaVinci Resolve 15 is now available for order on Amazon.

Dolby: Dolby will be demonstrating the complete Dolby Vision workflow, so if you have not yet seen what HDR is all about, or if you do not know the difference between HDR10 and Dolby Vision you need to pay them a visit. In addition the 5pm slot each day is dedicated to colorists who want to meet up and chat. CSI President Kevin Shaw will be hosting the last HDR demo of the day and looking forward to seeing you there.

FSI: If you don’t want to take a chance on winning the DM240, or if you have your eye on one of the newer FSI models, why not take a look at the IBC floor model sale. Some real bargains on some of the best reference monitors around. And yes, the amazing 3000 nit XM310K is now shipping. This is the best HDR reference display you can buy today, and our guess is that it is going to be quite a while before anything better comes along.
